Even if you are a teenager.
Applications for the 2022 Teen Artist Exploration of Isle Royale National Park are being accepted until February 16, the National Park Service has announced. This arts venture is for all aspiring teenage artists who want to develop their craft through experiencing the wilderness, and is open to all visual artists and performers, writers and composers between the ages of 13 and 18 at the time of entry.
Elisha Houle, the teenage artist of 2016, recalled her time on the island.
“Isle Royale and Teen Artist Exploration have opened my life to so many amazing things”, she was quoted as saying. “My art took on a new dynamic; I appreciate the wild and natural lifestyles that the island has shown me so much more.

Over the course of a week, two selected teenage artists will explore their art and the island, hike and backpack along the wave-swept shores, canoe through the tranquil bays of Lake Superior or sketch the wildlife in the boreal forest, the NPS said. A mentor will provide supervision during the artistic and wild exploration.
Interested artists must be available for at least one of the potential summer periods: June 24-29 or July 22-27.
This year’s program is a six-day, five-night camping experience in the Rock Harbor area. Park rangers and the program mentor will help with ferry transportation, campground reservations and camping gear, according to the NPS. A legal guardian must accompany a teen performer 17 years of age or younger.
The NPS said the Isle Royale Teen Artist Exploration Program is designed to be a camping experience. A designated campsite will be provided at Rock Harbor for the duration of the program. The NPS emphasized that entries must be comfortable camping for five nights.
On the first and last day of the program, selected performers and their families, up to four people in total, will enjoy free transport to and from the island provided on the Ranger III, a 165ft vessel operating from of Houghton.
Teens and their families should bring daily supplies, art materials in coordination with the mentor and, depending on the NPS, “an attitude of adventure.”
The Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association and the Copper Country Community Arts Council are program sponsors. In addition, the selected artists are required to donate to the park a work of art representative of their stay on Isle Royale. To be considered, all components of the application must be received digitally by 11:59 p.m. on February 16. Applications received after this date will not be considered. Notification to all applicants will be made by May 1.
