Description Performs intermediate professional work in the development and implementation of employee health and wellness programs, assessment and evaluation of workplace injuries, physical examination of new employees, hearing tests, tests drug-free workplace testing and related work, as required. The work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Human Resources.
Essential functions Develop policies and procedures for employee health and wellness programs; assessment, evaluation and treatment of work injuries; perform physical assessments and collect samples for drug and alcohol testing; prepare and maintain records and files. The following functions are only intended to illustrate the different types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Develops policies and procedures for employee health and wellness programs; works with city departments to develop policies relevant to employee health and wellness programs. Assesses and evaluates workplace injuries; provides treatment according to protocols for injuries sustained on and off the job. Provides physical assessments and testing for all new hires, periodic and annual testing for groups of employees at specific risk. Performs physical tests such as hearing, vision, lung function, skin tests for tuberculosis, and blood tests after exposure and regularly. Provides for the collection and analysis of samples for drug and alcohol testing for new hires and employees under reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, transfers and promotions. Coordinates the wellness program; carry out the indicated tests and development of the program. Provides required immunizations before and after exposure to hepatitis and rabies, influenza and tetanus; follows up with employees regarding compliance with the blood glucose and cholesterol program. Conducts training on CDL regulations, drug-free workplaces, FMLA, workers’ compensation, back injury prevention, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, CPR, and more. ; Prepares and maintains medical records in accordance with applicable regulations. Performs related tasks as needed.
Minimum qualifications In-depth knowledge of professional nursing techniques and practices; general knowledge of the principles of occupational health services; general knowledge of how to organize, coordinate and deliver health and wellness programs; some knowledge of workers’ compensation laws; ability to prepare operational policies, procedures and programs; ability to diagnose and administer treatment for a variety of common occupational illnesses and injuries; ability to identify employee health education needs and develop appropriate materials; ability to prepare and maintain records and reports; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to administer examinations, tests and treatment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, physicians, health care providers, insurance agency representatives and associates. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree with coursework in nursing or related field and significant experience in nursing or occupational health, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Possession of a valid Occupational Health Nursing certificate in the state of North Carolina preferred. Special consideration is given to those who have obtained and hold certifications in spirometry, urinary drug collection and CPR trainer. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of the State. Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional effort of up to 10 pounds; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequent sitting and using hands to touch, manipulate or smell and occasionally requires standing, walking and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is necessary for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of speech and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, aloud or quickly; hearing is needed to perceive information at normal levels of spoken words and to receive detailed information through spoken communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; the work requires preparation and analysis of written or computer data, visual inspection of small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment and general observation of surroundings and activities ; work requires occasional exposure to blood-borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment work is not exposed to environmental conditions; work is usually in a moderately noisy location (eg, business office with typewriters and/or computer printers, light traffic). , giving new employees physical tests, hearing tests, workplace screening tests and related work as needed.
