How can a student learn to read quickly and effectively?

Reading a book effectively means taking in what you have read, learning something useful for yourself, gaining invaluable experience and lots of ideas. It is a very useful skill for students, especially before exams. It has been of great use to me as I learned to read effectively as well as when I found writers who could write my paper inexpensively in line. Speed reading techniques are good for quickly viewing a large volume of primary sources and for finding necessary information. There is no deep immersion in the text.

By reading works of art, passing them by oneself, sympathizing with heroes, a person learns and develops spiritually. To do this, you need to carefully read, analyze the events described, the actions and thoughts of the characters, put yourself in their shoes, think about how you would have acted in a similar situation.

Classification of reading methods

There are four most popular ways to read:

Basic. The classic way we were taught in school. We just read the text sequentially from start to finish, follow the plot and the ending, perceive the meaning of what we read.

Analytic. The technique of reading with a pencil in hand. The goal is a depth study material in total immersion in the text. For maximum effectiveness, it is desirable to eliminate all distractions. When reading, notes are taken on paper bookmarks or in the margin of the book, the most important places are underlined in pencil, the meaning of incomprehensible words is deciphered.

To research. A method in which two or more sources on a specific subject are investigated simultaneously to clarify the overall picture. The facts can both complement and confirm, and differ according to the sources. To find out the truth in the latter case, you need to study additional material.

Inspection. The technique of speed reading. It is suitable in cases where a large amount of material must be consulted to search for certain information. The reader goes through page after page, capturing the most important moments.

Each of these methods is suitable in certain situations for working with literary sources.

Reading technique with a high level of memorization

With the usual (regressive) reading technique, for better memorization, it is advisable to underline important thoughts in the text, to take pencil notes in the margins or to write the most essential ones on a separate sheet. This contributes to a more careful reading, which affects the assimilation of the material.

But is it possible to read quickly and memorize what you are reading at the same time? It turns out that there is a technique of speed reading with a high level of memorization. To do this, you must follow seven important rules:

On initial reading, the text is read strictly from start to finish, without looking back at the words, lines, paragraphs that have already been read.

A reasoned return to the text for its understanding is only possible after the first reading of it in its entirety. The repeated study of the text must be caused by the conscious need to understand the difficult places encountered during the initial reading, when personal questions, thoughts and ideas arise.

To get the maximum information from the initial reading, use a special algorithm. While reading, try to grasp the main problem, mark the main facts with your inner eye for further study. After reading, analyze the material critically. Conclude if there is something new for you.

To rethink the text, go back to basics. Read them again, make sure everything is clear to you. Highlight the key, supporting words. After that, pay attention to the semantic series built around these words. And finally, select yourself the main semantic part containing the main definition information.

When reading, try to remove all kinds of articulations (speaking aloud, silent movement of lips, mental pronunciation). This speeds up the processing of information by the brain. To eliminate the mental joint, you can use the pointer technique. Simply move your pointer (finger, the back of a pencil or pen) along the line with the desired reading speed, increasing it as much as possible. This will not only get rid of the internal pronunciation, but also focus your eyes on the right line, not letting him wander the page and go back to what he has already read.

Develop peripheral vision and memory. Have you noticed that turning your head and moving your eyes left and right during a reading increases its speed? An even greater effect can be obtained if peripheral vision is developed. When used correctly, attention is focused on a keyword, and the brain perceives words on the left and right simultaneously (it is usually possible to perceive five words at the same time). For the development of peripheral vision, exercises with special pictures help, in which you need to quickly find the location of a certain sequence of many numbers.

The reading algorithm with memorization of information:

  • give yourself a mindset to memorize (clearly imagine what you need from the text);
  • assess the complexity and size of the text;
  • calculate the assimilation time by dividing it into actual memorization and repetition;
  • read the text fluently for the first time;
  • if necessary, come back to the main points and rethink them;
  • use the storage technology that’s right for you;
  • after a while, check the quality of memorization, trying to remember the meaning of what you are reading.

Memory technology

There are different memorization technologies. The method of figurative grouping has proved its worth. Its main idea is to divide the text into semantic blocks (no more than seven or nine are recommended), giving each one its key. A figurative embodiment in image form is created for each block. All images should be large, bright, memorable.

It is advisable to use more than one direction at the same time. Close your eyes and fix the created image in your short-term memory for up to twenty seconds, mentally shifting the attention between the elements of the image. This will make it even easier to transfer and store in long-term memory.

Do this exercise for each semantic block separately, then combine them into a picture or movie. Mentally hold this image for about thirty seconds. The effect of this technique is that when one of the keywords is mentioned, the entire image (movie) will appear in memory, and with it, at the association level, the semantic blocks read from the text.

Exercises to practice speed reading techniques

  • Read in reverse or in reverse order.
  • Read the text in peripheral vision with a fixed gaze in the middle of each line.
  • Study a page-sized text for 30 seconds, then repeat it.
  • Try taking a quick glance at the paragraph without reading it, then convey the main idea in your own words.
  • Try to read the text and understand it with the “diagonal” eye movement.
  • Tips that increase the efficiency and fascination of reading
  • To take notes

Highlight meaningful thoughts and incomprehensible places in the text. Thoughts can be written in a separate notebook, and notes with comments can be made on paper bookmarks. So you can go back to the moments you didn’t understand the first time around and rethink them so that what you read comes together in a single image.

After getting used to daily reading, having learned to ignore the surrounding reality and fully immerse yourself in the world of the book, you will notice that your life has not only become more interesting, but has also started to change. for the best.

Through books, you will learn to focus not only on the reading process but also on other important things. Your horizons will broaden, your level of scholarship will increase, your speech will be enriched. You will become an interesting and confident interlocutor and learn to solve complex problems.
