In the film industry, Christopher Nolan is considered one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors. Due to his reputation and innovative storytelling, many aspire to collaborate with the director of Batman. One of those actors was Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who worked twice with Nolan and often expressed his admiration for the filmmaker.
But when Levitt tried to follow in Nolan’s footsteps and expand his reach in Hollywood, Nolan gave him some advice. However, this is advice the actor ultimately decided not to take.
What made Joseph Gordon-Levitt want to direct films?
In addition to acting, Joseph Gordon-Levitt had long been interested in sitting in the director’s chair. the 500 summer days star said Deadline that making movies was something he had been considering since taking a hiatus from his acting career for college.
âWanting to make a film started back then, honestly. When I decided to start playing again, I had just recently gotten my first copy of Final Cut Pro, âLevitt said. âI started editing things, and I liked it so much that it became the biggest motivation for me to drop out of college. I realized I could just sit there doing and doing. cut out stuff, or I could write this paper.
For Levitt, while acting was his passion, it was also his key in the world of cinema.
âI love acting and hope to do it the rest of my life. But since I started acting again in 2003, my goal is to someday make a movie,â added Levitt.
He would seek advice from directors he would work with, such as Rian Johnson, Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan. And although Nolan tried to give Levitt some good advice, it was advice Levitt disagreed with.
The advice that Christopher Nolan gave to Joseph Gordon-Levitt
According to Levitt’s own account, Christopher Nolan gave the aspiring filmmaker many words of wisdom. He imported some of this advice into his own filming techniques. But there was another piece of advice that Nolan gave to the Project power actor Levitt was against.
“I told Chris Nolan that I was going to direct a movie and he immediately supported me, which meant a lot to me,” Levitt said according to The HuffPost. “I told him I was going to act and direct at the same time and he said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ So he didn’t just say ‘Do whatever you want’.
In Levitt’s directorial debut, Don Jon, Levitt would both star and direct the film. But Nolan thought it might have been a bit of an overwhelming endeavor for the first-time filmmaker.
“He said to me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this the first time?’ I said I really knew that and he said, ‘Okay, but I’m raising my hand now and saying you might want to think about it. That’s quite an extra challenge that you might want. -to be up the second time around, âremembers Levitt.
But Levitt chose to stick to his guns despite Nolan’s advice.
Why did Joseph Gordon-Levitt take a break from his acting career?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was frequently featured in films at the peak of his career. Some time after 2016, however, Levitt took a little break. Her reason for taking a break could be the same as that of many famous new parents.
âIt was because I wanted to spend time with my kids,â Levitt said.
He later added that it was the longest break he had ever taken from acting. One of the first films he made upon his return was 7500. In the film, Levitt plays an airplane pilot tasked with protecting the cockpit of three hijackers. For Levitt, this was the right movie he kept coming back to, especially since he was concerned about his diminishing star power.
âThere were, of course, voices in my head expressing concerns about momentum, career building and things of that nature,â Gordon said. âBut I knew that if I wanted to be happy I had to choose my first project because it would challenge me as an actor and really intrigue and inspire me. And with 7500, I think I really found this.
