In addition, TWR is sponsoring a Black History Month writing contest, where students from TWR-affiliated educational institutions were invited to submit descriptions of people or groups of African descent, past or present. , which had the most significant impact on society. Selected winners can win prizes ranging from American Express gift cards to computer tablets. So far, submissions to the competition have included innovators like Kezzmekia Corbett, an African-American immunologist who led a National Institutes of Health team that developed a COVID-19 vaccine that Moderna eventually brought to market; and Madame CJ Walker, America’s first black woman millionaire.

“It’s important to celebrate [Black history]and to learn more about all of these African Americans, who are like many of my students and who have accomplished a lot – many of which have helped pave the way for these students to have a free public education,” said Karen Rogersa ninth year Monroe, Louisiana English teacher in Carroll High Schoolwhich has 97.1% African-American students.
“Writing is not an easy thing to teach,” adds Rogers. “But when you have the resources [like those from The Writing Revolution]along with TWR’s strategies and methods, students learn to write very effectively.”
TWR has made some of its extensive library of paid resources free to the public since March 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of public schools. The overwhelmingly positive response from educators around the world has prompted TWR to make the free resources permanently available, while strengthening its paid subscription service offerings. During the same period, TWR shifted its method of delivering in-person writing instructions to online.
About the writing revolution
Founded by Dr. Judith C. Hochman and based at New York CityThe mission of The Writing Revolution is to enable students, especially those from historically marginalized communities, to develop writing skills, as well as the ability to read and think critically, so that they have a better chance of succeed in school, at work and in life.
TWR trains and supports teachers and school leaders in implementing the Hochman Method, an explicit set of evidence-based strategies for teaching explanatory writing. The method moves from sentences to compositions and is integrated into curricula in all content areas and grade levels. The organization believes that improving writing skills contributes to improved overall academic performance and will position students with stronger personal skill sets that can help close the social inequality gap. TWR has positioned handwriting instruction as a solution to help address student learning loss that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Published in 2017, the book, The Writing Revolution: A Guide To Advancing Thinking Through Writing In All Subjects and Grades, was co-authored by Dr Hochman and Nathalie Wexler. A bestseller within the educator community, The Writing Revolution has been sold in all 50 U.S. states, 36 countries, and more than 1,000 colleges and universities.
